EWC Golfers Complete Season with 2nd place regional finish

The Eastern Wyoming College golf team finished the regular season with a second place regional finish.  The team score of 607 was the best team score for the Lancers during their spring season.

Individual placing for the Lancers at the Regional Tournament were as follows:

                Cayl Carpenter, sophomore, Casper, WY – 5^th place

                Brandon Rideout, freshman, Wamsutter, WY – 6^th place

                Wacey Lym, sophomore, Evanston, WY – 8^th place

                Garrett Mortimer, freshman, Erie, CO – 10^th place

All Region Performers were Lym (7^th) and Carpenter (8^th).  Both were also All-Region Academic players and are candidates for Academic All-American awards.

EWC Students donate to backpack program

EWC Student Senate, Gay-Straight Alliance and the Vet Tech clubs teamed up to donate $1,650 to the GCSD#1 Backpack Food Program which provides weekend food for students who are reliant on the school lunch program.  EWC students from these organizations are regular volunteers packing the backpacks and unloading the food deliveries at Torrington Middle School. 

After being alerted of the program’s funding needs, EWC students made this cause a priority.  According to TMS’s Marilyn Cotant, “This donation certainly provides security to the Backpack Program, and gives us the means to complete this school year, provide a summer version of the program and serve public school students into the Fall of 2013.  These students demonstrate the importance of giving and volunteerism and for that we are so very grateful.” 

Registration Event for Goshen County Graduates, May 21st

Eastern Wyoming College has announced that a registration event will be held for Goshen County graduates on May 21, 2013 at the main campus in Torrington.  Students will meet with an advisor and register for the Fall 2013 semester.

Students will have the opportunity to begin with COMPASS placement exams, if needed.  This placement exam is used to ensure placement into the appropriate English, reading and math courses.  This is a fee of $15 for these computer-based exams.  Students should bring a calculator for the mathematics portion of the test.

Parents are invited to attend a program called “You and Your Student” while the students are testing.  Advisors will be available following the testing to assist students in registering for classes.  Lunch will be provided for students and their families from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.

Financial Aid staff will be available to assist students with the financial aid process and preparing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

EWC Men’s Rodeo Team wins regional title

The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Men’s Rodeo Team was crowned the Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) Champion Men’s Team this past weekend.  This position earns the team six positions at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR).

“I could tell early on this team was special,” Jake Clark, EWC Rodeo Coach, said.  “I knew it would be a great year, but to end up on top in this region is a great accomplishment.”

“There are some tough teams in this region,” He continued.  “I am really proud of this group and how hard they have worked.”

Troy Wilcox, of Red Owl, South Dakota, won the Men’s All-Around Champion.  Wilcox will compete in the team roping, steer wrestling and calf roping at the CNFR.  

“Troy returned to school this year because he had some business to finish and he did,” Clark said.  “He has been an outstanding team leader and competitor throughout his college career.”

Team roping partners Derek Weinreis, of Beach, North Dakota, and Levi O’Keefe, of Mohall, North Dakota, won the region in the team roping.  Weinreis is the regional champion team roping header and O’Keefe is the regional champion team roping heeler.  This is Weinreis and O’Keefe’s second consecutive qualification to the CNFR.

“These guys have been so consistent since the beginning of the season,” Clark said.  “They had one of the best years a team roping team could have.” 

Wilcox teamed up with freshman Cotey Hanson, of Berthold, North Dakota, to win the reserve champion team roping title.  Wilcox is the CRMR Reserve Champion Header and Hanson is the CRMR Reserve Champion Heeler.  

“Cotey teamed up with Troy this year and it has been a great match,” Clark said.  “Cotey had an outstanding rookie season.  I’m very pleased with his performance in his freshman year.”

Rounding out the EWC team competing at the CNFR is Dustin Dailey, of Long Pine, Nebraska.  “Dustin had a great year in the steer wrestling as a freshman and I’m glad to see him earn a national qualification,” Clark said.

The EWC Rodeo Team earned additional honors during the regional awards ceremony.  The Lancer Rodeo 2013 was voted as the “Rodeo of the Year” for the Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR).  “Our goal is to produce a great rodeo for the fans to watch and a great rodeo that provides each contestant the best chance in their event,” Clark said.  “We appreciate the support of the college, the community, and families each year.”

EWC Rodeo Coach Jake Clark was also named the 2012-13 “CRMR Coach of the Year.”  “It is an honor to be voted by your peers for this award,” Clark said.  “I give a lot of the credit to my team who has worked so hard this year and have been an outstanding group to coach.”  

The 2012-13 Central Rocky Mountain Region college rodeo season concluded with the University of Wyoming college rodeo May 3-5 in Laramie.  The 2013 CNFR will be June 9-15 in Casper, Wyo.

Over 400 cowboys and cowgirls from over 100 universities and colleges compete in the CNFR in Casper each year. Contestants compete all year in one of the NIRA's 11 regions for a chance to rope or ride at the CNFR.  Visit www.cnfr.com for schedules and ticket information.

“The CNFR is a great show,” Clark concluded.  “We are fortunate to have this event here in Wyoming.  I encourage folks to consider coming to Casper in June to support EWC’s student athletes.”

EWC to hold 64th commencement May 10th at 7pm

Eastern Wyoming College is pleased to announce that the 64^th annual commencement ceremony will be held on Friday, May 10, 2013 at 7:00 pm in the EWC Fine Arts Auditorium.

Commencement activities will begin with a barbecue for graduates and their families in the Student Center at 4:30 pm on Friday, May 10^th.  The commencement ceremony will begin at 7:00 pm with a processional provided by Janet Howard, Pianist.  Mrs. Cheryl Raboin, Mathematics Instructor, will serve as the Director of Ceremonies.  The National Anthem will be sung by EWC Student Molly Bloodgood.

Dr. Tom Armstrong, President, will then provide a welcome and introduce special guests.   Ms. Olivia Sanchez, EWC Student Senate President, will provide a welcome on behalf of the students.

The keynote speaker will be Major General Ed Wright.  He was appointed by former Governor Dave Freudenthal in 2003 as Wyoming’s adjutant general.  He served in this capacity for nearly eight years and retired in 2011.  During his 37 years of service in the Wyoming military, he indicated that working with soldiers, airmen, families, employers and veterans was the most gratifying experience of his career.  Among his many accomplishments is the creation of the Wyoming Youth Challenge Program located in Guernsey.  This program benefits 16-18 year old students who have dropped out of high school and then are given another opportunity to complete a program of study which includes a residential experience emphasizing healthy choices and preparation for GED or high school completion.

Eastern Wyoming College Foundation President, Patrick Korell will then present the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award and the 2013 Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Dee Ludwig, Vice President for Learning, will present the candidates for graduation.  Following will be the presentation of certificates and degrees by George Nash, President of the EWC Board of Trustees.    Closing remarks will be spoken by Raboin.

A ceremony will be held to honor the GED graduates on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 6:00 pm in Tebbet rooms 131-132.

EWC Golf team finishes 2nd at McCook Tournament

The Eastern Wyoming College Golf team finished in 2^nd place in the golf tournament held in McCook, NE.  Wacey Lym, sophomore, Evanston, WY had an individual finish of 3^rd place.

“The weather was cold and windy on Thursday and cold on Friday but less wind” said golf coach Casey Jones.
